In an inspiring turn of events, Mansfield High School has rejuvenated its Robotics Team, bringing the excitement of engineering, coding, and teamwork back to its students. Under the guidance of Principal Russ Booth and motivated by a grassroots student initiative led by senior Declan O’Brien, the team has taken off after years of dormancy. O’Brien, who expressed his long-standing desire to participate in a robotics team, articulated his hopes for future students to share in this enriching experience.
Empowering Student-Driven Learning
At the heart of this initiative is a commitment to student-led learning, with all elements of design and programming being executed by the students themselves. This not only fosters creativity but also instills critical problem-solving skills. “Our team for this year has done 100% of the designing, assembly, and programming for our robot, Roger,” explained O’Brien, showcasing the enthusiasm of the team members as they rallied to bring their creations to life.
Real-World Skills from STEM Competitions
Involvement in Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation events empowers students with hands-on experience in STEM fields. As the team prepares for its next competition on February 1 in Framingham, they have invested over 40 hours in redesigning and perfecting their robot. This experiential learning process—characterized by trial and error—equips students with transferable skills valuable for their future careers.

The revival of the Robotics Team signifies a shift towards fostering innovative learning environments. With plans to expand and possibly seek sponsorship for sustainability, the team aims to inspire a new generation of engineers and technologists.
