In celebration of Black History Month, we shine a spotlight on Novel Idea Creative, an extraordinary educator
in Brooklyn who has spent decades defying odds and inspiring others. As a Senior African American woman.
Novel’s journey has been one of resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to personal and academic growth.
Born with a passion for the arts, Novel graduated from the School of Arts in Seattle, Washington, in the early 1990s. Her dream was to become an inspiring actor, and with that ambition, she made the bold move to New York City. With no connections and little more than her aspirations, she faced the city’s notoriously competitive entertainment industry head-on. Over time, she landed a few acting roles, including performances at the Royale Theater on Broadway in The Kentucky Cycle and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Despite her talent and hard work, Novel's dreams in the entertainment world never fully materialized. She faced countless ups and downs—financial struggles, industry biases, and the harsh realities of an unpredictable field. But rather than let those struggles define her, she used them as fuel for a new chapter.
Novel reinvented herself as an artist and curator, focusing on the art of the African Diaspora. Her academic journey led her to earn a PhD in Philosophy and Aesthetics, making her a true Doctor of Art. Through her work, she explores cultural narratives, identity, and the richness of Black artistic expression. Her dedication to these themes has made her a respected voice in the art world, where she continuously advocates for underrepresented artists and educates others on the significance of Diasporic art.
Today, Novel is a dedicated educator in Brooklyn, where she inspires students with her story, her knowledge, and her passion for learning. She uses her experiences to empower the next generation, encouraging them to embrace challenges, chase their dreams, and never let circumstances dictate their potential.Her story is a powerful reminder that success is not always linear and that true greatness comes from resilience, adaptability, and an unyielding belief in oneself. For those who have struggled for decades to carve out a place for themselves—just as Novel did—her journey serves as an unwavering beacon of hope. This Black History Month, we celebrate Novel Idea Creative—a woman who turned obstacles into stepping stones and continues to uplift others through her work and wisdom.
